One municipality, two towns, two humanist claims. Figline is the 1433 birthplace of Marsilio Ficino, the philosopher who translated the complete Plato for Lorenzo the Magnificent; Incisa is where young Francesco Petrarch spent his childhood, from 1305 to 1311, on family land. Since January 2014 the two Valdarno centres have shared a single administration serving 23,124 residents.
The merger never merged their identities: Figline keeps its porticoed square and collegiate church, Incisa its narrow village strung beneath the cliff that names it. Florence lies twenty kilometres downstream, a neighbour these towns have been talking to for seven centuries.
