Feast of Saint Michael
📅 Every year, on 29 September
On 29 September Cinigiano celebrates Saint Michael; between September and October the village also holds the Grape Festival, with a parade of floats from its three districts.
In 1254 the lords of Cinigiano put the castle under Siena's protection, but went on commanding as before; in 1278 the Sienese banished the last of them on the charge — the source calls it a pretext — of having assaulted a churchman travelling to Viterbo. Then came the Guidi counts, and Siena had to buy the territory back in 1389; the count went only in 1404, driven out by a popular rising.
The clock tower, which is medieval, was rebuilt in the nineteenth century in imitation of the Torre del Mangia of Siena. At Piantaverna, instead, there is a church built between 1953 and 1961 by the Ente Maremma during the land reform. And the list of the churches of the comune ends with seven entries under the word «vanished».
