Saint Fabian, patron of Civitella Paganico
📅 Every year, on 20 January
Civitella Paganico celebrates Saint Fabian on 20 January.
Between 1940 and 1943 some twenty Jewish refugees were interned at Pari, families with children among them. When the Germans came the whole village moved as one and hid them in the scrub, where they were fed and looked after until the end of the war. Once the front had passed they left for Rome, and some came back afterwards to thank the village.
On the edge of the comune are the baths of Petriolo, mentioned in writing since 1130: pope Pius II came here for his gout, and Siena had cabins built and put a tax on the bathers. In 2007, near the castle of Casenovole, a student found an untouched Etruscan tomb: they call it the badger's tomb, because a badger had dug its den at the entrance.
