In 1259 Omberto Aldobrandeschi was killed here, the man Dante puts among the proud in the Purgatorio; with his death the castle passed to Siena. Before that it belonged to the Aldobrandeschi, who held it as early as 973, and before them to the abbey of Monte Amiata.

In 2007, at Arcille, the fossil remains came to light of three ancestors of the dugongs, which lived here four and a half million years ago, when these sandy banks were the floor of the sea: one of the three is held to be the most complete specimen of its species in the world. In the village, instead, the old church of Sant'Antonio Abate became a theatre in 1893, and still keeps pieces of fourteenth-century frescoes inside.
