On the second of September 1849 Giuseppe Garibaldi took ship from Cala Martina to escape towards Liguria: he had been hidden nearby, in the house of Angiolo Guelfi. That cove and Cala Violina next to it lie inside the Bandite di Scarlino, the protected headland that drops to the sea high and ragged.
The village on its hill was bought by Pisa in 1227, which rebuilt the Aldobrandeschi keep and closed the three terzieri, Sopra, Mezzo and Sotto, inside a single circle of walls. Then Scarlino disappeared: in 1834 it was demoted to a hamlet of Gavorrano, and there it stayed a hundred and twenty-six years, until 1960, when it became a comune again.
