Suvereto

Province: Livorno · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,142 · Postal code: 57028

The name is already written in 973 and means the cork wood; on the arms there is indeed a cork oak, with a lion crossing the trunk. In the castle here the body of the emperor Henry VII lay for two years, after his death at Buonconvento in 1313: tradition says that Dante came to the pieve of San Giusto to pay his respects to «l'alto Arrigo».

Twice a year the village runs its palio: no longer on horseback — pairs of pushers roll a barrel of five hundred kilos on its belly through the paved streets. One is in May for the patron saint, the other on the thirteenth of August, and that is the emperor's palio. The statutes of 1700 already spoke of the palio as an old tradition; the barrels came only in 1994.
