Semproniano was called Samprugnano until 1963, and in that same year it became a comune in its own right again: after a long spell of decline it had been absorbed into Roccalbegna, and on 29 January 1963 it recovered both its independence and its old name, the one that tradition traces back to the Roman gens Sempronia. The lion on the coat of arms, on the other hand, comes from the Aldobrandeschi, who held these villages before they submitted to Siena around the middle of the fourteenth century.

The hamlet worth the journey is Rocchette di Fazio, a medieval village with its walls, the ruins of the Aldobrandeschi fortress and the Palazzo Pretorio: here the Romanesque parish church of Santa Cristina and the fourteenth-century Palazzo dell'Ospedaletto belonged to the Templars. Not far off is the centre for threatened birds of prey, where red kites and Egyptian vultures are reared for release, and on the road to Saturnia stands the great olive tree of Fibbianello, more than a thousand years old.
