Castell'Azzara

Province: Grosseto · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,601 · Postal code: 58034

The name comes from a game of dice. Tradition says two Aldobrandeschi brothers were disputing the castle and decided to play for it at zara, the gambling game of the time: on the coat of arms, above the three towers, the three dice are still there. The town hall stands at eight hundred and fifteen metres, the highest in the province of Grosseto.

In the mines of the Siele they dug cinnabar, from which mercury is obtained. A Jewish family from Livorno, the Della Riccia-Finzi, had come to work there: they were arrested in early December 1943 and all died at Auschwitz in May 1944, including Gigliola, who had been born on 19 February while the family was already shut in the camp of Roccatederighi.
