Careggine

Province: Lucca · Region: Tuscany · Population: 584 · Postal code: 55030

Careggine is the least populated municipality in the province of Lucca, high on the flank of the Apuan Alps that looks towards the Garfagnana. Around 720 a nobleman from Lucca had a chapel built here to Saint Peter; by the twelfth century it had become one of the oldest pievi in the Garfagnana, and from up there was administered the hospice of Isola Santa, where travellers crossing from Versilia to the Serchio valley found shelter.

The local lords, whom a document of 988 calls the Nobiles de Caricino, controlled the roads of the Serchio valley for centuries, and won privileges from both the emperor and the pope by siding each time with whoever suited them. Then the village changed hands constantly — Malaspina, Florence, Pisa, Lucca — until in 1446 a popular revolt drove out the Florentines and the Garfagnana passed to the Este.
