Piazza al Serchio

Province: Lucca · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,458 · Postal code: 55035

Piazza stands where Tuscany touches Emilia and Liguria, and for centuries the bishop-count of Lucca held it with the title of count of Piazza and Sala: that title ended up in the coat of arms, in use since 1870, together with the square of the old village of Sala. In the eighteenth century it passed to the Este of Modena, and it stayed in the province of Massa until 1923, when the Garfagnana was assigned to Lucca.

The village has made a museum of its own stories: it houses the Italian museum of folkloric imagination and a centre for the documentation of oral tradition named after Gastone Venturelli. In the scattered churches there remain a triptych by Pietro da Talada in the church of Borsigliana, which an imperial diploma of 1020 already mentioned, and a gilded polyptych long attributed to Filippo Lippi which is in fact by Bernardino del Castelletto.
