Minucciano

Province: Lucca · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,221 · Postal code: 55034

The name comes from a Roman consul, Quintus Minucius Thermus, who according to Livy was attacked by the Ligurian Apuani on a pass in these mountains and got away by a hair's breadth; before that the place was called Saltus, the wood. In 875 the village became a fief of the Malaspina, who sold it in 1270, and in 1287 it passed to Lucca, whose stronghold in the upper Serchio valley it remained for centuries.

In 1447 Minucciano was made a vicaria and obtained something rare for a mountain village: the right to strike its own coin. They called it the barbone, the big beard, because on one face was the Volto Santo of Lucca with its thick beard. Between the fifteenth century and the nineteenth the municipality was a Lucchese island surrounded by Este, Malaspina and grand-ducal lands, wedged between the Apuan Alps and the Apennines.
