Sillano Giuncugnano

Province: Lucca · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,150 · Postal code: 55039

Sillano Giuncugnano is one of the youngest comuni in Italy: it came into being on the first of January 2015 through the merger of two villages of the upper Garfagnana, Sillano and Giuncugnano, and part of its territory lies within the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine national park. It is a scattered comune, with the town hall at Sillano and a branch office at Magliano: the merger brought the two administrations together, but the houses stayed where they were, spread across the slopes.

The merger also left a curious heraldic mark. While it waits to give itself a new emblem, the comune goes on using the two older coats of arms for its own communications, that of Sillano and that of Giuncugnano, set side by side like two signatures at the foot of a contract. Among the churches scattered through the hamlets there is one worth the climb: at Rocca Soraggio, the church of the Nativity of Mary, which everyone calls the church of the Volto Santo because it houses the wooden image that gave it that name.
