Feast of Saint Sixtus and Saint Margaret
📅 Every year, on 6 August
On 6 August Villa Collemandina, a municipality of 1,363 inhabitants in the province of Lucca, celebrates its patrons Saint Sixtus and Saint Margaret (san Sisto e santa Margherita).
The name of the village is the surname of its lords. From the end of the tenth century the area was a fief of the Cunimondinghi, beginning with Rodilando son of Cunimondo the fourth, and from that house comes the Collemandina the village still carries. Today's municipality is made of seven villages — the main one, Canigiano, Corfino, Magnano, Massa Sassorosso, Pianacci and Sassorosso — and it was born between 1803 and 1806, when four small independent municipalities were abolished and put together.
On 7 September 1920 the epicentre of the earthquake that shook the Garfagnana and the Lunigiana fell right here: twenty-nine people died in the village and the old medieval borough was levelled. It was rebuilt in the years that followed, but with another face. Three years later, in 1923, Villa Collemandina passed with the whole Garfagnana from the province of Massa Carrara to that of Lucca. Above the village rises the Pania di Corfino, a wall of rock visible from all along the valley, and on its meadows there is a botanical garden.
