Feast of Saints Quiricus and Julitta
📅 Every year, on 15 July
On 15 July Tresana, a municipality of 2,085 inhabitants in the province of Massa-Carrara, celebrates its patrons Saint Quiricus and Saint Julitta (san Quirico e santa Giulitta).
The name comes from a Byzantine tower, the turris that gave Turresana: in 1164 Barbarossa granted the village to the Malaspina of Mulazzo, and in 1559 Tresana became an independent marquisate, with a mint that struck coin for a few years. When the family died out the fief was sold at auction and the Corsini princes of Florence took it for a hundred and twenty-three thousand Tuscan lire.
Of the castle of Giovagallo few stones are left, but there lived Moroello Malaspina, the «vapor di Val di Magra» of the Inferno, with his wife Alagia Fieschi, whom Dante has her uncle Pope Adrian V praise in the Purgatorio: «buona da sé», good of herself. The town hall is not at Tresana but at Barbarasco. On 18 January 2012, during maintenance work, the gas pipeline that crosses the municipality exploded at Mulino, injuring dozens of people.
