Few villages have changed flag so often: the bishops of Luni, the Malaspina, then Genoa, which took it in 1416, the Doria, the Malaspina again, until in 1772 it ended up with the grand duke of Tuscany and in 1847 passed to the duke of Modena. It reached the province of La Spezia only in the twentieth century.
On 19 June 1944 partisans attacked the castle, then a garrison of the Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana. The attack failed, but a few days later the fascists left anyway, and from then until the Liberation Calice was treated as free territory. The village holds the war cross for military valour. The population is 1,146.
