Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina

Province: Pisa · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,290 · Postal code: 56041

The municipality is made of two detached pieces, kept apart by Pomarance and Radicondoli, and by some forty metres it fails to touch Volterra. In 1639 grand duke Ferdinando II raised it to a marquisate for Luca degli Albizi, who with the fief got civil and criminal justice and the taxes on milling and on livestock; in 1781 the last Albizi, childless, gave the whole thing up.

Under this ground there is steam: the geothermal field of Castelnuovo is the largest in continental Europe, and around Sasso Pisano the lagoni throw out water above sixty degrees, which ends up in a public wash-house. For the men who worked the steam vents the boric village was built in 1958, with its chapel, to a design by Giovanni Michelucci.
