Monteverdi Marittimo

Province: Pisa · Region: Tuscany · Population: 778 · Postal code: 56040

The village grew up around an abbey: San Pietro in Palazzuolo, founded in 754 by the Lombard nobleman Walfredo, whom tradition holds to be the founder of the family later known as the Della Gherardesca. The castle came later, and took a different road: while the people of the village submitted to Volterra, the monks put themselves under the protection of Massa Marittima.

The monastery was abandoned in 1561, and the monks moved inside the castle. With the Leopoldine reforms of 1776, once the fief was abolished, Monteverdi obtained its municipal autonomy. In 1944 a Jewish family from Livorno had taken refuge on a farm in the municipality, trusting in the isolation of the place: on 10 March the podestà reported their presence to the police headquarters in Pisa, the arrests were made on the first of April, and the two women of the family were deported to Auschwitz on 16 May. They did not come back.
