Read more →The coat of arms is a silver lion on a red field gripping, in its left paw, a carrot root. It is not a joke: in 1336 the comune, then a fief of the Aldobrandeschi, had a shield divided in two, with a rampant lion on one side, the sign of Siena, and on the other a bunch of roots surmounted by a crown, that is the name of the village turned into a picture. Later the two symbols were merged into one, and the crown, which recalled the fief, disappeared.
The countryside is scattered with castles, Elci, Falsini, Fosini, Montingegnoli, Colletalli, and at the Galleraie there are the baths. Inside the Cornate nature reserve stands the monument to the Boscaglia Brigade. The composer Luciano Berio chose to live here from 1972; and since 1987, every summer, the village has hosted a festival of theatre, music and film.
