Feast of Saint Leonard
📅 Every year, on 6 November
On 6 November Lajatico celebrates its patron Saint Leonard of Limoges; the town hosts the Teatro del Silenzio, a natural amphitheatre that comes to life for a single concert each year.
On the coat of arms of Lajatico there is a sprig of rose and a motto: «All lives, all dies». It was granted by royal decree in 1884, and it remains one of the driest municipal mottoes anyone can read. The name comes from the Latin Larius, a personal name, with the suffix that marked ownership: the farm of Larius. The village took shape from the twelfth century around the castle of the Pannocchieschi counts of the Elci branch, and the rock fortress of Pietracassia still stands in the territory.
Andrea Bocelli was born at La Sterza, a hamlet of Lajatico, and on the hills of the municipality stands the Teatro del Silenzio: an open-air amphitheatre that keeps quiet all year and opens for a single concert, to which people come from all over the world. From that comes a curious statistic too: Lajatico appears regularly among the Italian municipalities with the highest average income, and the credit largely belongs to that one resident. At Orciatico, the other hamlet, there is an astronomical observatory run by universities and amateur associations.
