Feast of Saint Blaise
📅 Every year, on 3 February
On 3 February Montecatini Val di Cecina celebrates its patron Saint Blaise, to whom the town's church is dedicated; among the municipality's sites is the Torre dei Belforti.
In the nineteenth century the mine of Caporciano was the largest copper mine in Europe, and it had been dug since Etruscan times. It closed in 1907, but the name of the village had already become that of a company, Montecatini, which later, joined to Edison, would become Montedison.
On the fourth level of the mine, one hundred and forty-four metres underground, there was a chapel with a ceramic Madonna made by Ginori in 1853, copied from Raphael. At the top of the village stands the Belforti tower, twenty-eight metres high: in its walls they left two holes that served as spyglasses, one aimed at the keep of Volterra and the other at the Rocca Sillana. In the old washing sheds there is now an open-air theatre.
