At Pomaia, since 1977, there is one of the largest centres of Buddhist culture in Europe. Not far off, at Pastina, one of the last charcoal burners in Italy is still at work, and there is an ecomuseum of alabaster. At Monteforti, on the other hand, no one is left: the village is empty, and of the sanctuary, once the most important in the district, only the walls remain.

In 1943 the village was chosen as a place of internment for foreign Jews. On 23 July an Austrian couple arrived, the Kammers, who had already spent two years between forced residence and a camp. Under the Italian Social Republic they were arrested: he, Karl, died at Auschwitz on 16 May 1944; she, Dora, escaped deportation only because she had died in January.
