Ponsacco

Province: Pisa · Region: Tuscany · Population: 15,237 · Postal code: 56038

The name comes from pons sacci, Sacco's bridge: probably the man who built it, or who stood there taking tolls from anyone crossing the Cascina on the road to the Volterra salt works. The coat of arms takes it literally: a peasant crossing a bridge with a sack on his shoulder.

Standing on the border between Pisa and Florence, the town changed masters constantly: the fortress was built in the 1360s by the Pisan doge Giovanni dell'Agnello, the Florentines took it in 1406, and in 1509, rather than lose it again, they pulled down its walls and towers themselves. Since the war Ponsacco has lived on furniture; there are 15,237 residents.
