Castellina Marittima

Province: Pisa · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,985 · Postal code: 56040

On 2 May 1918 the airship U-5, on its way back to the air station of Pontedera after patrolling the sea between Elba and Corsica, came down at Valdiperga: all five men aboard were killed. On the spot there is still a memorial stone, and a plaque on the town hall.

For a century Castellina was a village of alabaster: the quarry opened at the beginning of the nineteenth century and the stone went to the craftsmen here and in Volterra; today there is an ecomuseum. The marquisate was created on 17 March 1628 for Lorenzo de' Medici, of a collateral branch of the grand dukes, and in the eighteenth century the family added the surname Tornaquinci to their own: they became the Medici Tornaquinci della Castellina.
