Fauglia

Province: Pisa · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,592 · Postal code: 56043

The name is first written in 1187, Favulia, and comes perhaps from the Latin faba: the field of broad beans. In 1433 the Florentines destroyed the castle, and the village made itself again as it is today, laid out along the ridge on the single street that crosses it from north to south.

In the nineteenth century the geographer Emanuele Repetti described it as one of the most populous villages of the Pisan hills, made of little quarters full of artisans, most of them tailors. Fauglia was much larger then than now: in 1808 Collesalvetti broke away, and in 1902 Crespina. The village has a museum devoted to the painter Giorgio Kienerk.
