The name comes from the hill the town stands on, Carbium, the bald one, because nothing grew on it. Above, on Monte San Pancrazio, stand the walls of an archaic Osco-Umbrian sanctuary that watched over the roads between the Nera and the Tiber valleys; from these parts came also a small bronze of a warrior with a helmet, now in Villa Giulia. The old centre of the 1,883 residents is a climb and descent of alleys, arches and vaults.
