Stroncone

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 4,924 · Postal code: 05039

In 1404 the brother of Pope Boniface IX seized the fortress, and to be rid of him the people of Stroncone destroyed their own town. Two hundred years earlier it had been Narni that pulled down walls and houses, and Innocent III laid an interdict on the city to force it to rebuild.

Since then the arms have carried the white cross and the papal keys. The name comes from the castrum Hugonis of marquis Hugo, which became Castrugone and then Stroncone; the first document dates from 1012. In 1799 the village held out for seven days against the French troops of general Jabłonowski, and was sacked. In 1927 it was annexed to Terni, and the 4,924 residents got their comune back only in 1947.
