Labro

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 344 · Postal code: 02010

Labro stands on a spur of the Rieti mountains looking down on Lake Piediluco. There are two explanations of the name: a legend has it that the village arose where the local lord killed his first wild boar — aprum in Latin — and indeed the coat of arms carries a boar; others derive it from lavabrum, a basin, because of the lake below. The first lord of Labro, Aldobrandino de Nobili, was invested in 956 by Otto I, king of Italy, and his descendants still live in the family castle.

Standing on the border between the lands of Rieti and those of Spoleto, Labro spent centuries quarrelling. The longest dispute was with the castle of Luco over Monte Caperno, with the men of Rieti on one side and those of Spoleto on the other, until in 1298 pope Boniface VIII sent two cardinals to make peace and to have whatever had been built on the mountain pulled down. It was not enough: in 1364 the people of Labro sacked Luco and the pope confiscated all their property. After the last war the village was emptying to the point of risking disappearance; so the heirs of the Nobili called in the Flemish architect Ivan Van Mossevelde and from 1968 began restoring the place building by building. The work is not finished yet.
