Feast of Saint Gregory the Great
📅 Every year, on 12 March
On 12 March Configni, a municipality of 672 inhabitants in the province of Rieti, celebrates its patron Saint Gregory the Great; the town has the Chiesa di San Cassiano Martire.
The name says where it stands: in loci confinei, on the borders — between the Lombard duchy of Spoleto and the Patrimony of Saint Peter, and today between Lazio and Umbria. The coat of arms matches: a tower with a fire burning at its top and the motto Luceat ut procul, «so that it may shine far», that is, a signal tower.
The first document naming it is of May 856, the donation by which pope Benedict III gave Terni back a piece of the Sabina; soon after a Lombard noblewoman, Susanna, left the castle to the abbey of Farfa. Then Configni belonged to Narni, to the Orsini — who gave it its statutes in 1539 — and finally to the Church. Until 1927 it was Umbrian: the province of Rieti came later.
