Cibiana lies in a side valley, that of the Rite torrent, which long kept it apart from the rest of the Cadore. Iron was dug from the mountains around, and with that iron the village made keys: it is the trade of the place, and in a modern form it goes on today.
Since 1980 the stone houses have been covered with murals: not decoration for its own sake, but paintings that tell the trades and the history of the family living in that house, made by artists who came even from Japan and the former Soviet Union, with new ones added every year. On top of Monte Rite, inside a fort of the Great War, the Museum in the Clouds has stood since 2002, devoted to rock and to Dolomite mountaineering: it is one of the seats of Reinhold Messner's museum.
