Pieve di Cadore

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 3,956 · Postal code: 32044

Pieve is the historic capital of the Cadore, and still is in the strict sense, because the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore has its seat here. Its palace was built in 1447 by resolution of the council of the Community that then governed these valleys; the battlemented tower was finished in 1491, and in that year its first bell was hung. It burned during the war of the League of Cambrai and was rebuilt by 1518; in 1589 the roof and part of the façade collapsed under a snowfall the chronicles call exceptional.

Titian was born here, and his family lived on timber like almost everyone else: the Cadore sold its woods to Venice. His birthplace is a modest building that had vanished for centuries behind a later extension, and it was identified in the early nineteenth century thanks to the description given of it in a deed of sale of 1580: today it is a museum. The comune holds the gold medal for military valour for the risings of 1848.
