Pandoro star-shaped Christmas cake, soft, with vanilla icing sugar
Eight points, powdered sugar like snow on a mountain: pandoro was born in Verona in 1894, patented by Domenico Melegatti.
Read more →Veneto ends in the mountains. Belluno is the region's only entirely mountainous province and its largest by area, set wholly within the south-eastern Alps. Its 61 municipalities climb from the valley floors around Feltre and the provincial capital, Belluno, up into the Dolomites of Cadore and Ampezzo. The business daily Il Sole 24 Ore has twice ranked it first in Italy for quality of life, in 2009 and again in 2017.
The big draw is the Tre Cime di Lavaredo above Auronzo di Cadore, the three peaks that give the group its name, reached on foot rather than by car. Cortina d'Ampezzo is the other pole, pairing ski slopes with the Dolomiti d'Ampezzo regional nature park on its doorstep. Down in the valleys, Feltre and Belluno keep a slower pace and are worth a stop in any season.
