Feast of Saint Lucy
📅 Every year, on 13 December
On 13 December Vodo Cadore celebrates its patroness Saint Lucy, to whom the town's church is dedicated, in the heart of the Cadore area.
Vodo di Cadore lies in the middle Boite valley at 910 metres, on the Alemagna road, hemmed in by two Dolomite massifs: the Antelao, 3264 metres, and the Pelmo, 3168. At the foot of the Pelmo stands the Venezia refuge, the base for climbing it, and lower down the Talamini refuge; Alta Via number one of the Dolomites passes by both. Above the village survive the old mountain dairies of Ciàuta and Rutorto, where milk was worked.
The name probably comes from the Latin vadum, a ford, though given the shape of the ground some prefer to read it as a gully; in the Veneto, however, there are identical place names that meant a retting pit for flax and hemp. The first record is from 1240, written de Hodo. For forty-three years the village had a railway: the Dolomites line ran through here from 1921 to 1964, with the Vodo halt and the Peaio-Vinigo station. In 1960 a dam on the Boite formed the lake of Vodo, which feeds the Pontesei power stations.
