The Tofane on one side, the Cristallo on the other: Cortina's natural amphitheatre is the most celebrated parlour of the Dolomites, UNESCO-listed since 2009. The "queen" hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics — the first ever televised — and returned to Olympic duty in 2026 with the Milano-Cortina Games.
Corso Italia is the shop-window promenade, but the substance lies above: kilometres of historic ski runs, mountain huts where lunch is a religion, and in summer the via ferratas and Great War trails. Expensive? Yes. With valley alternatives for those minding their wallet.

In 1412 a small band of men from Ampezzo and Cadore stopped the imperial troops of Sigismund of Luxembourg at the Cimabanche pass. The credit went to the Madonna della Difesa, and every 19 January since Cortina has kept the vow.
