Colle Santa Lucia

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 391 · Postal code: 32020

The iron of the Fursil, dug out of the mountains around, made Colle's fortune. In 1612 the Chizzali family built at Villagrande a house to administer the mines, the Cesa de Jan: it looks like a Tyrolean house, with its oriel and its mullioned window, and the gratings over the windows are made of the very iron that came out of the seams. That family went far: in 1648 it paid the Republic of Venice the hundred thousand ducats needed to enter the patriciate.

Colle was Tyrolean for a long time: the temporal power of the bishop of Bressanone lasted here 776 years, until 1803, and in the First World War the men of the village left for Galicia with the Austrian army. In 1923 it passed from the province of Trento to that of Belluno, but the real tie broke much later: only in 1964 did the parish move from the diocese of Bressanone to that of Belluno.
