La Valle Agordina

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,150 · Postal code: 32020

La Valle Agordina — La Val, in Ladin — lies in the valley carved by the Missiaga and Bordina torrents, below Monte Talvena and the San Sebastiano range. Water here is not only scenery: in April 1701 a flood that the village still calls la Boa killed about fifty people and carried away the old church, which stood where the cemetery is now. The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo was rebuilt straight afterwards, at the beginning of the eighteenth century; other floods have come over the centuries, the last big one in the autumn of 1966.

Inside that church, above the tabernacle, there is a fresco worth looking at: God enthroned against a blue field, and at his sides two figures, probably Saint Peter and Saint Michael, with Saint Peter's Square behind one and the valley of La Valle behind the other. At Conaggia, in the twelfth century, stood a castle called Castel Canaola, held by the Della Valle: nothing of it is left standing, but recent digs have turned up a number of finds. Ladin is still spoken, and since 1999 a state law has recognised the Agordino as a linguistic minority area.
