Rivamonte Agordino

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 666 · Postal code: 32020

Rivamonte Agordino is a scattered comune with its town hall in the hamlet of Rosson, in an area of Ladin linguistic minority. It was called Riva, which remains the dialect name: it became Rivamonte in 1867 and took the addition «Agordino» only in 1964. Unlike the other villages of the Agordino, which lived off the land, Rivamonte lived off the mine: those of the Valle Imperina, closed in 1962, trained generations of miners and mining surveyors who then went digging half the world over. The site is now a world heritage property, with its smelting furnaces restored and a visitor centre.

Those who were not in the mine made chairs. The chairmakers here were called conthe and had a jargon of their own, the scabelament del contha, which served one precise purpose: when they were far from home and met a fellow villager, they could exchange news about work without anyone else understanding. Today it is known almost only to the old, and the UNESCO club of the Agordino runs courses to teach it to the young. Of the mine there is a memory in church too: the altarpiece of Saint Barbara that in 1903 the manager Magno Magni commissioned from Achille Beltrame, the same man who drew the covers of the Domenica del Corriere.
