Cencenighe Agordino

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,402 · Postal code: 32020

The village stands where the Biois runs into the Cordevole, and in dialect the floods are called brentàne: the one of 1882 and the one of 1966, which killed one person, brought down houses and carried off the cemetery of Veronetta. They rebuilt it on the other side of the Cordevole, at Le Valesine.

People settled here around the year one thousand, drawn by the mines nearby and by the woods that fed the furnaces for smelting metal; the name may come from a Cincius, a Latin landowner. In 1404, with the whole Agordino, Cencenighe passed to Venice and was one of the regole of Soprachiusa, the part of the valley above Listolade. The centre then was not this one: it was Coi, where the church stands, and Villagrande.
