Lozzo di Cadore

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,497 · Postal code: 32040

The Friuli earthquake of 1348 brought down a landslide that wiped out the village; it was rebuilt lower down, and above the houses the great fan-shaped fracture in the rock can still be seen. The place was a good one: water, fertile ground and a climate less harsh than in the rest of the Cadore.

On the name nobody agrees: some derive it from a Roman Lucius, some from luteum, a marshy place, some from a sacred wood, and some from light, for the signals that were lit to warn that invaders were coming. From the graves outside the village came a funerary stone with an inscription in the Venetic language.
