Feast of Saint Anne
📅 Every year, on 26 July
On 26 July Zoppè di Cadore, a municipality of 265 inhabitants in the province of Belluno, celebrates its patroness Saint Anne (sant'Anna).
In the church of Sant'Anna there is an altarpiece attributed to Titian: it was commissioned by a notary of Pieve di Cadore, a friend of the Vecellio family, who in his will of 1528 ordered his heirs to build a chapel here and to pay fifty ducats to have it painted. In 1797, to save it from Napoleon's soldiers, the villagers rolled it around a fir trunk and hid it in a woodpile: the trunk oozed resin and ruined much of the painting. It was restored in 2007.
Zoppè is the smallest and least populated municipality in the province, and it lies in the Val di Zoldo although it has always belonged to the Cadore: it is said that people here preferred to take their children to be baptised in the Cadore rather than at the Zoldo parish church next door. A nineteenth-century priest wrote that in 1198 a man from the Comelico had built a forge here, bringing ore from the Fursil mountains: he cited no source, but the remains of a furnace found in 1940 while digging the cemetery seem to bear him out.
