Borgoricco

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,478 · Postal code: 35010

The roads of Borgoricco still draw a chessboard: it is the Roman grid, the centuriation with which the colonists divided this plain, and which two thousand years have not erased. Via Desmàn is the decumanus maximus, which led from Vicenza to Altino; via Cornara ran from Padua to Asolo. The village has a museum devoted to the centuriation itself.

On the municipal arms, in one of the quarters, is the grid itself, with the thin cross of the two roads: it seems to be the only municipality in Italy authorised to bear it. The three wavy bands are the three watercourses, Muson dei Sassi, Muson Vecchio and Lusore; the castle recalls the stronghold of the lords of Borgoricco, a family extinct in the fifteenth century.
