Campodarsego

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 14,169 · Postal code: 35011

The name means «burnt field», and it was taken so seriously that when the coat of arms was granted in 1938 the heraldic authority imposed red as the colour of the field, precisely to recall that etymology; the three wavy pales, on the other hand, are the three watercourses that cross the territory, the Muson dei Sassi, the Tergola and the Piovego. The first mention is of 1199, as «villa Campi de Arsico». And underneath all this the Roman grid is still there: the centuriation of the Paduan countryside, with its perpendicular axes, can still be read in the pattern of the fields and roads.

In the Middle Ages the pieve of Sant'Andrea and its castle ended up with Speronella Dalesmanni, one of the most singular women of her time: rich, striking, and willing to use any means to increase her fortune. On her death everything passed to her son Jacopo da Sant'Andrea, who squandered that fortune in a very short time — and with such notoriety that Dante placed him in the Inferno, among the spendthrifts. Campodarsego then entered the fief of the da Camposampiero and, in 1405, with the fall of the Carraresi, the Republic of Venice.
