Vighizzolo d'Este

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 935 · Postal code: 35040

The name comes from viculus, the little village, and the first written record is from the year 980: a deed exchanging land between the bishop of Verona and a married couple from Monselice. Back then all this was marsh, channels and a lake full of fish, and the village stood exactly at the one point where you could cross. That is why a fortification was built here, destroyed and rebuilt several times; the last word on it is from 1483, in a traveller's note: «Vigizuol dov'è un castelletto che già io fu... Or ne resta solo una torre sdruscida», only a battered tower left.

In 1248 the village was attacked by Ezzelino III da Romano; then it passed to Corrado di Vigonza, to the Malaspina, to the Este, to the Carraresi, and in 1405 to Venice along with all the land around. The land reclamation begun in the sixteenth century was completed only in 1920. The church of San Giovanni Battista is recorded from 1077 and in 1178 was given to the monastery of Carceri: almost nine hundred years later, on 22 January 2024, Vighizzolo merged with Carceri itself, and together they formed the municipality of Santa Caterina d'Este.
