Casale di Scodosia

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,866 · Postal code: 35040

Casale di Scodosia has 4,866 inhabitants south-west of Padua, in what is called the Scodosia: an ancient territory whose capital was Montagnana, and the two stars on the coat of arms are there to remember it, along with a cornucopia for abundance. The land has been inhabited since the second millennium before Christ, but it was marsh, and was reclaimed only in the fifteenth century, under Venice.

In the winter between 1092 and 1093, just outside the village, at a place called Trecontai, the emperor Henry IV defeated the army of Ugo del Manso, son of Alberto Azzo d'Este. Much later, after the passage to Austria in 1797, this part of the Scodosia became brigand country. At Altaura stands villa Correr, put up in the eighteenth century reusing the materials of the sixteenth-century farmhouse that stood there before: it has renders decorated in natural earth and windows made of glass medallions from Murano, and today it houses the ethnographic museum of the Scodosia. In the village, every year, the Carnival of the Veneto is held.
