Castelbaldo

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,625 · Postal code: 35040

The village was born in 1292 as a border castle of the Paduans against the Scaligeri and the Estensi, and it takes its name from the podestà of Padua of the day, Lambertuccio de' Frescobaldi. In 1331 the league that carries its name brought together the Scaligeri, the Visconti, the Estensi, the Gonzaga, Florence and Naples, all against the king of Bohemia.

The fortress held four hundred men in arms, eighty of them on horseback, and was the seat of a podesteria for four centuries. Then it was no longer of use: in 1528 the Venetian Senate ordered it demolished, and all the material was carried to Legnago to raise a new stronghold there. Of the castle there remain a tower, lived in today, and the name of piazza Castello.
