The Nativity of Mary, patron of Merlara
📅 Every year, on 8 September
Merlara celebrates the Nativity of Mary on 8 September, in the church dedicated to her.
The gonfalone granted to Merlara in 1981 is a white cloth crossed by a black band. The comune, however, does not use it: the one actually flown is parted blue and white. The arms are older, granted by royal decree in 1928. The name of the village is also on a bottle: since 2000 a wine of controlled denomination of origin has been made here and in the comuni around, and it is named after the place. The red is mostly merlot, from half to seventy parts in a hundred, and the rest are other local red grapes; the white is friulano in the same proportion; and there is a frizzante made from marzemino.
The parish church, dedicated to the nativity of the Virgin, was built in 1891, but inside it keeps an altarpiece painted three hundred years earlier, in 1591, by Leandro da Ponte, one of the Bassano. Outside the village stands villa Barbarigo-Da Zara, a patrician house of the sixteen hundreds in the manner derived from Palladio, surrounded by a park of magnolias centuries old; it has passed through the hands of several families, and it carries the names of two of them. The comune has a single hamlet, which is called Minotte.
