Casalserugo has 5,452 inhabitants in the plain south of Padua, with the Bacchiglione marking its eastern boundary. The name is a man: casale plus ser Ugo, a local figure attested at the end of the eleventh century as Ucho de Casale. The place appears for the first time in 918 as Villa Casalle, and the specification arrives in the thirteenth century, when it is called Casale domini Hugonis; the official spelling remained Casal Ser Ugo until a decree of 1941.
On the municipal coat of arms there are a castle, a blue band and a cross, and each of them tells something: the castle is the fortification of which in the nineteenth century only a stump of tower was left, today absorbed into Villa Ferri; the band is the Bacchiglione, here called the Roncajette canal; the cross recalls an old almoner who gave half his income for dowries for needy girls and the other half for medicines for the poor sick. On the night between the first and the second of November 2010 that river broke its banks, and Casalserugo was among the worst hit comuni.
