Legnaro

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,544 · Postal code: 35020

At Legnaro, within the walls of a fifteenth-century farming court, nuclear physics is done today: the national laboratories of the INFN stand a few steps from the Corte Benedettina, which the monks of Santa Giustina built to govern the draining of these marshes. There tithes and rents were collected, and around the yard with its weighbridge stood stables, granaries and the room for silkworms.

Napoleon seized it all in 1810; in 1837 the state sold the court to Ermanno Todesco, a Viennese banker, who added the stable, the barn and, in 1852, a silk mill. Today it houses Veneto Agricoltura. The village name comes from lignarium: here the wood of the forests that covered the plain was cut and stored, and on the arms a tree trunk and a fox remain.
