Due Carrare

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,943 · Postal code: 35020

The place that gave the Carraresi their surname, lords of Padua in the fourteenth century, has existed as a municipality only since 1995: that year a referendum joined Carrara San Giorgio and Carrara Santo Stefano, and the two settlements became districts of a single town. Of the old Da Carrara castle only ruins remain; of the abbey of Santo Stefano, recorded from the eleventh century, what remains is the district's nickname, the Bassìa.

On 9 August 1918 the aircraft of the flight over Vienna took off from the San Pelagio airfield, when Gabriele D'Annunzio went to drop leaflets on the enemy capital instead of bombs. The villa beside it now houses the Museum of Air and Space. At Pontemanco two water mills still turn on the Biancolino canal, and Villa Priuli was begun in 1597 to a design by Vincenzo Scamozzi.
