Pernumia

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 3,915 · Postal code: 35020

Pernumia was a trading settlement on the road that linked Bologna to Aquileia, and under the parish church of Santa Giustina lies a group of Roman tombs. What hid that origin was the water, or rather those who took it away: between the eleventh and the twelfth century the Benedictines carried out a great reclamation here that changed the shape of the ground, so much so that the village looks entirely later than the classical age. In Lombard documents it was called Pronumian, or Pronomias.

The coat of arms granted in 1926 holds together the two things that made the place: a castle, for the small fort that defended the upper course of the Vigenzone canal, and a tripod with five flames, taken straight from the blazon of the local lords, who had drawn their surname from the village and not the other way round. Beside the bell tower stands the Captain's house, called Ca' di Dio, a medieval building that was the seat of the Paduan guard; and in the fields around, asparagus has been grown for more than fifty years, with a festival of its own.
