Battaglia Terme

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 3,933 · Postal code: 35041

It is the smallest comune in the province by area, and it is made almost entirely of water. The Battaglia canal brings the waters of the Bacchiglione here from Padua; in the middle of the village a triple lock, the Arco di Mezzo, gives birth to the Vigenzone canal; and the Rialto canal passes underneath the Battaglia canal through the culvert known as the botte del Pigozzo. The navigable canal, dug around 1200, brought the freight traffic with it: the village has a museum of river navigation.

Before the canals, though, there was the water that comes out hot. On the hill of Sant'Elena stood the thermal grottoes and a hospice for pilgrims, and the oldest mention of the place is a bequest of Speronella Delesmanini of 1199 which set a condition on handing over the land: that a lodging for pilgrims be built on part of it. The word «Terme» entered the name only in 1925, by royal decree; six years earlier the frazione of San Pietro Montagnon had left to be a comune of its own, today Montegrotto Terme.
